Extra Credit Assignment candidate for Physiological Psychology
    Altered Norman Pirie quote.
“ When one is asked whether a particular entity/thing is capable of consciousness, the only sensible answer is, ‘I don’t know; we know a number of things it can do and a number of things it can’t do and if someone will define the word “consciousness” I will try to see how the particular entity/thing fits into the definition”.
( up to 1 point)1: What does the “altered” quote mean?
(up to 2 points) 2: How would you define ‘consciousness’? To help simplify this overwhelmingly difficult question, give me a list of 3 things a “conscious” entity can do, that a nonconscious entity cannot.
( up to 2 points) 3: By your definition, explain to me how a Human, a canine, a honeybee, a tomato plant, and a virus fit your definition of “consciousness’.
    NOT PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT
    Just for context:
Original quote refers to the question of whether viruses are “alive” or not.
“When one is asked whether a filter passing virus is living or dead, the only sensible answer is, “I don’t know; we know a number of things it will do and a number of things it won’t and if someone will define the word ‘living’ I will try to see how the virus fits into the definition” (Norman Pirie, 1937)
(Prof Note: “filter passing virus” refers to how viruses were discovered; They filtered diseased biomatter dissolved in water through porcelain, the pours of which are too small to allow bacteria and fungi through, but large enough to allow water and viruses through)
