Week 2 Prompt: Consider the VT, readings, and video for Week 2 about values and moral development, values clarification and transcultural and spiritual issues in nursing care. We are reminded that different systems of values and morals can collide in healthcare. As nursing professionals, we may be confronted with different systems of values. We can feel conflicted about the cultural values of our patients, our employing institutions, other social institutions and the ways in which they view health and healing. The YouTube video, Nurse dragged from hospital by police, is a stark example of an ethical situation with conflicting systems of values faced by a nurse, her reaction based on her values, morals and ethics, and the police response. After reflecting on the video, what are your thoughts about how you can best prepare yourself to manage everyday ethics and ethical situations in nursing? After reflecting, where did you develop your values about health and health care? What strategies can you use in your nursing practice to manage differences between your own values, the values of your patients and the values of the institution you work for?
