Case Management in Clinical Settings

In substance abuse treatment programs, case managers participate as members of a multidisciplinary treatment team by collaborating closely with clinical staff, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, addiction counselors, nursing staff and psychiatric technicians. In addition, certified peer recovery specialists are valuable assets to the multidisciplinary treatment team to promote a culture in which each individual’s treatment needs and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment.

In your presentation, you will imagine you are the case manager, a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team in an Inpatient Program. In preparation for your presentation, present yourself professionally with your appearance. You may use note cards as you present your information, but you should maintain eye contact with the camera. Your presentation should be conversational as if you were talking with other treatment team members.

Read the following scenario about the client you will discuss in your presentation.

Case Scenario: Sabrina is a patient at the XYZ Recovery Center in Dallas, Texas. She has received integrated treatment services for her diagnoses of Opioid Use Disorder, Severe 304.00 (F11.20) and Bipolar I Disorder, Mild 296.4 (F31.11). Sabrina has made significant progress with her treatment goals in her four months of treatment.

The treatment team is meeting to discuss resources for Sabrina as she prepares for discharge in the next 60 days. Sabrinas treatment plan consists of individual therapy with the psychologist, Dr. Rankin; her psychiatrist, Dr. Atkins, prescribes her medications and monitors her response to the medications; the addiction counselor, Ms. Campbell, addresses her addiction treatment counseling and group sessions; and you. As Sabrinas case manager, you are responsible for coordinating Sabrinas services in treatment and also preparing referrals and resources for Sabrina to prepare for her discharge out of the program.

An added member to the treatment team is Melinda, a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) who will begin working with Sabrina as she prepares for transition. In your meeting, you will introduce the CPRS Melinda to the treatment team. Assume this is Melinda’s first-time meeting with the treatment team. Also assume that Sabrina has already spoken to the treatment team and has addressed her progress and questions.
