SOWK 210: Intro to social work Practice

Coppin State University | Department of Social Work | SOWK 210

Self-Care Assessment | 30% of Final Grade

Due Date April 29, 2026 with IN-CLASS PRESENTATION at 3:00 PM

Develop a practical, personalized self-care plan based on your own strengths and stressors as a future social worker. The goal is to build habits that support your well-being and longevity in the profession.

Overview

This assignment has five components, each worth 6 points (30 points total). You will assess your self-care needs, build and implement a one-week plan, reflect on the experience, and present your journey to the class.

Written components should be approximately 250 words each, double-spaced, 12pt font, with 1-inch margins.

1. Self-Care Assessment 250 Words (6 pts)

Reflect on your current well-being as a future social worker. Address:

  • Your strengths coping strategies and personal resources you already use
  • Your stressors demands or situations that deplete your energy
  • Gaps in support where you need more care, structure, or resources

2. Self-Care Plan 250 Words (6 pts)

Using your assessment, design a one-week self-care plan with at least two specific goals and activities in each of the areas below. Note: A specific goal describes what you will do, how often, and for how long (e.g., “Walk 20 minutes three times this week” rather than “Exercise more”).

  • Physical any practice that supports your body through movement, rest, or nourishment
  • Emotional any practice that helps you process, express, or regulate your inner emotional life
  • Social any practice that fosters connection, belonging, or mutual support with others
  • Spiritual any practice that provides purpose, grounding, or inner renewal

3. Self-Care Implementation 250 Words (6 pts)

Carry out your plan for one week and document what you actually did.

Focus on facts: what happened each day, what was hard, and what you adjusted.

Save your deeper interpretation for the Reflection section.

  • What you actually did each day
  • Challenges you encountered and how you responded
  • Any adjustments you made to your plan and why

Tip: Keep brief daily notes (handwritten or on your phone) throughout the week, then use them to write this section.

4. Self-Care Reflection 250 Words (6 pts)

After the week, step back and interpret the experience. This is where you move from what happened to what it means.

  • What worked well and why
  • Challenges you faced and how they affected your plan
  • How your self-care practices impacted your well-being and resilience
  • What you would do differently or continue going forward

5. Self-Care Presentation 5 Minutes, In-Class (6 pts)

Give a brief, personal 5-minute presentation sharing your self-care journey. Regardless of format, cover:

  • Your plan and what the week was like
  • Key insights, challenges, and reflections
  • Why self-care matters in social work practice

Choose a format that feels natural to you the goal is to communicate your experience, not produce a polished product. Options include:

  • Vision Board create a one-page pictures only visual (slide or poster) of your self-care goals moving forward and briefly explain it
  • Visual bring a hand-drawn or digital one-pager (chart, map, or diagram of your week)
  • Photo share one or two photos from your phone that captured a moment, and explain why
  • Object bring one physical object that represents something meaningful from the week and unpack it
  • Creative share a short poem, list, or passage you wrote during the week
  • Playlist share 23 songs that soundtracked your week, with a brief explanation of each

Note on sharing: You are encouraged to be open but only share what you are comfortable sharing with the class. There is no requirement to disclose personal details beyond what you choose.

Peer response: After each presentation, one classmate will offer a brief response one strength they noticed and one question they are left with. Instructor will assign responders at the start of class.
