This course prepares you to spend a semester abroad, in Paris, where you will (fictionally) live with the Poulin family in the 5th arrondissement. During this module, you have acquired the knowledge necessary to do this new project successfully: in France, you will need to find a “petit boulot” (student job) that will give you some “argent de poche” (pocket money) for your expenses outside of home.
In France, students often have petits boulots in supermarkets like PRISUNIC, FRANPRIX, etc, local restaurants, local stores like Valrie does in the book store rue Mouffetard, or chains like H&M or Zara, electronic/house/book… stores like La FNAC, DARTY, or department stores like le BHV, le PRINTEMPS, les GALERIES LAFAYETTE, MONOPRIX, etc, etc, etc.
Often, they also tutor younger students (soutien scolaire pour les lves) like Lo does, and babysit (faire de la garde d’enfant, du babysitting, tre nounou). They also walk / take care of animals during the day (garde/promenade danimaux domestiques). Many students will do off-jobs, like get groceries for the elderly, clean houses or stores, etc. You can also find jobs that are more related to your specific experience, specialization and skills.
When I was a student, I worked on Saturdays and every summer in Le PRINTEMPS, in diverse departments like shoes, children’s clothing, houseware, women’s clothing, etc. My least favorite was perfume, because it gave me a headache at the end of the day, and my favorite was shoes, because I am a shoe hoarder đ
You will apply for a “petit boulot” (student/part time job) and you will do a typical French job search: une recherche demploi-tudiant.
You need to 1) read the announcements on the provided websites, 2) write a letter of motivation, 3) create your CV in French, and 4) present yourself in a 2 min video.
Read the announcement in the following websites dedicated to “petits boulots” and select one that will correspond best to your work experience, and the circumstances of your stay in Paris.

French letters of motivations are much more formal than American ones. Below are links to inspire you, if I see that you have copied-pasted the information below and it doesn’t correspond to your CV or your level in French (i.e: FRE2200), it’s a zero and a referral to student conduct, as it is plagiarism, and cheating. MAKE IT PERSONAL, and use the vocab and the grammar you have learned in this module. Maybe it will be useful sometime in your life!
Voici quelques exemples pour vous inspirer crer votre propre lettre, la vtre !!
French CVs are different than American CVs in their layout. Check the templates and samples in the following websites and create YOUR OWN. Do not copy and paste a template already existing, be a bit more creative than that! And don’t get a zero and a referral to student conduct.
Vous trouverez des modles de CV ci-dessous, ce sont des inspirations, soyez cratifs, faites le vtre :
ChatGPT / AI of any sort / online translators / more electronic or physical help are strictly prohibited in this class and for this exercise. If you get caught (and believe me, it’s easy) cheating, plagiarizing, using unaccepted devices to do this exercise, then you get a zero and a referral to student conduct. You may lose at best, an entire semester, and get a permanent record on your transcript. Do not get yourself in this situation, it’s not worth it, just play the game!
You will be graded according to the following:
| catgorie / note |
0: sorry! |
1: sorry! | 2: needs more work đ | 3: needs attention or improvement | 4: almost there! | 5: perfect! |
