Signature Assingment

MAT 152 Signature Assignment

The purposes of the project are to distinguish between quantitative and qualitative data, to demonstrate both an

understanding of the appropriate means of displaying, analyzing and interpreting statistics of each type, and the

appropriate use of technology to produce a report of the findings.

Project Outline

1. Pick a meaningful survey topic that can be investigated by asking people in your surroundings (students, coworkers,

neighbors, etc.). Identify and explain how the sample was selected. You must survey at least 30 people.

2. Your survey must contain 3 questions:

A. 1 question that has a qualitative (word) response. The question needs to have at least 4 multiple choice

responses, and these choices should cover nearly all possible responses. Yes/no questions are not accepted.

B. 2 questions that give a quantitative (numeric) response that you think may have a (linear) relationship.

3. You are required to get your instructor to approve your survey. This will count as 10 points of the SA final grade.

4. Collect and compile the data.

Include the phrase Actus reus in at least three places in your project.

The report you submit must include the following:

5. An introduction, explaining what topic is being investigated and how the survey was conducted. Identify and explain

how the sample was selected. Is it biased? If so, why? How could you have taken a better survey?

Text

Open your Excel document with your data results in the first three columns. Be sure to include proper headings.

6. Important: Using Excel Strongly suggest printing Lab 2, Lab 3, and Lab 4 Instructions for guidance.

PART A. For the qualitative data

1. Create a frequency table.

2. Create a pie chart and a Pareto chart.

3. Write a conclusion. This should include, but is not limited to, discussing the qualitative data charts

and graphs, stating the mode, and any interesting finds in your data.

4. Include a 25 word summary of the first season of Seinfeld in the middle of your conclusion.

PART B. For the quantitative data Pick one of your quantitative data questions. Create the following tables/graphs.

1. Create a histogram using between 5 and 10 classes (Visual Binning).

2. Calculate the mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and five number summary.

3. Create a box plot.

4. Identify any outliers.

5. Write a conclusion for this section of your data. This should include answering the following: What is

your mean and median? Based on this information, is your graph skewed? Do you have any outliers?

State the value of the outliers, or state that no outliers were noted, and state if you were surprised by

the outliers? What other outcomes did you find interesting from your graphs/charts.

6. Include a 25 word summary of Newtons Third Law of Motion in the middle of your conclusion.

PART C. Using both of your quantitative questions, (using Lab 4 as your guide), create/answer the following:

1. Determine which one you believe to be the explanatory variable, and which is the response variable.

2. Construct a scatterplot.

3. Graph the best fit line on the scatterplot.

4. Find the correlation coefficient.

5. Determine the regression equation of the best fit line.

6. Write a conclusion. This should include, but is not limited to, stating the explanatory and response

variables, stating whether there is a linear correlation and what that r value is, and whether that is

similar to what you expected. State what the least squares regression line is and explain the meaning of

the slope and y-intercept mean in this situation. Also, interpret the y-intercept or explain why it could

not be possible. State other things that you found interesting from the results of your two quantitative

questions. Make a prediction about what you expect to happen in the future, based on your results.

7. Include a 25 word summary of the Quadratic Formula in the middle of your conclusion.

PART D. From the scatterplot and correlation chart below, write a conclusion that includes the following information.

A survey was conducted to determine the weight and Highway MPG of 20 cars.

1. What is the explanatory variable and the response variable?

2. What is the equation of the regression line?

3. What is the correlation coefficient, and is it significant?

4. Based on this scatter plot, please provide an interpretation of the slope and the y-intercept in one

or two sentences. (If there is no valid interpretation, please explain why.)

Finally, if you were to do this project over again, would you do anything differently?

How to Submit Your Signature Assignment:

1) Open a new Word document.

2) Consider this to be a well-written report, in paragraph form.

You should have an Introduction, followed by the introduction of your data sets (copied from Excel).

Your work should continue in paragraph form, with each section getting a small introduction and an

appropriate conclusion. This includes data sets, graphs, and any other images you present.

Any work you want credit for should be given a response in paragraph form. Do not expect your

instructor to read your Excel data charts or graph images to answer any of the required questions.

Answers that are found in your tables/graphs will not be given full credit unless you have stated the

correct information in your well-written paragraphs.

3) Screenshot your data cells and include them in the report. Important: I must see your original data responses,

otherwise it will be impossible to give you the points you want for your correct calculations and conclusions.

4) For each graph you created, you can right click on it and choose COPY. Then return to your word document and

PASTE the graph in the place you want it. Dont forget to introduce and conclude each image you provide.

5) Once all charts are in the word document, you review your initial Introduction, intros and conclusions for Parts

A, B, and C, and answer questions for Part D from the chart on the Signature Assignment in paragraph form.

6) Save your final Word Document and submit it to BrightSpace. Make sure that you are saving it in Word format
